The Road to Emmaus
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit"

Read the story from Luke 24.13-35.
Here are some interesting points to emphasize:
Vs. 13 – "Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem. "
“two of them” refers to Cleopas and another disciple. Many scholars suspect that it may have been Cleopas and his wife.
Vs. 14 – " They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. "
“everything that happened” refers to Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion.
Vs. 16 – " but they were kept from recognizing him. "
The fact that they were kept from seeing Jesus could show us that we can experience God and not recognize Him if we just assume He is not there. It is important to be looking for Him.
Vs. 19-24 – “What things?” he asked.
“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”
Cleopas gives a good summary of who Jesus is, but he assumes that their hope for Jesus as redeemer has been crushed.
Vs. 27 – "And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. "
This is a good opportunity to reinforce for the children the value of the WHOLE Bible, both the Old and the New Testament. It all points to Jesus!
Vs. 28-29 – "As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, 'Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.' So he went in to stay with them. "
Though Jesus intends to spend more time with them he gives them the opportunity to invite him in rather than inviting himself in. He is the same with us. He is waiting for us to invite him into our lives!
Vs. 30 – "When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. "
What Jesus does echoes what he did at the last supper. The bread and the wine are symbolic of his body and blood. The fact that Jesus is revealed to them at that moment is significant!
Where were the two disciples walking to?
From Jerusalem to Emmaus
What were they talking about?
They were talking about everything that had happened in Jerusalem the last 3 days
Who came and walked with them?
What did Jesus explain to them?
He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures (beginning with Moses and all the prophets) concerning himself.
How did they find out it was Jesus?
When He took the bread, gave thanks and broke it, giving it to them, their eyes were opened.
Is it easy for us to see Jesus? Can we see Jesus at work in our lives?
Let your children share their thoughts. Encourage them that like the two on the road, it is common to not recognize Him right away, but as we seek to know him better through studying the Bible and knowing His heart through prayer and meditating on Scripture...meditating is just a big word for thinking about something over and over...we will begin to recognize Him more and faster. We will see His kindness in an unexpected gift from a friend that meets a need in your heart. We will recognize His favor when things go just right for your benefit, when a decision or circumstance could have gone a completely different direction. He is that wonderful thought in your mind when you read something or hear a story and all the sudden everything makes sense, you know what to do to follow God better. He is Emmanuel, God with us, and the next time you recognize Him working in your life, be sure and do what these two did...go and tell all about it! Don't wait! Run with excitement and tell the good news!
Pray with your children that God will open up the "eyes" of your heart to see Him more and more in your lives, and that He will give you the privilege and opportunity to share it with others every time it happens.
